Ex-pro boxer on death row seeks retrial

TOKYO, Japan - Toshikazu Sugaya, 63, who spent 17 years in jail after being wrongly convicted of murdering a 4-year-old girl in 1990 in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture, walks to the Utsunomiya District Court in Utsunomiya in the prefecture on Oct. 21, 2009, to attend his retrial. Author Junzo Shono dies at 88

TOKYO, Japan - Junzo Shono (in this undated file photo), an eminent author and a member of the Japan Art Academy, died of age on Sept. 21, 2009, at his home in Kawasaki, Kanagawa Prefecture, people close to him said on Sept. 22. He was 88. A native of Osaka, Shono began writing novels after World War II and won the Akutagawa Award in 1955 for his book titled ''Purusaido shokei (Poolside Scene).'' (Kyodo)

Ex-abductee Hasuike wins nonfiction award

TOKYO, Japan - Repatriated abductee Kaoru Hasuike (file photo) won an award Aug. 27, 2009, for a nonfiction work that features his experience of being abducted to North Korea and living in the reclusive country. Hasuike went missing along with his girlfriend, Yukiko Okudo, in Niigata Prefecture in July 1978, and returned to Japan in October 2002 with Okudo, to whom he got married in North Korea, after Pyongyang admitted to past abductions of Japanese citizens. Man jailed for life for 1990 murder freed after DNA test

CHIBA, Japan - Toshikazu Sugaya, a 62-year-old man sentenced to life in prison for the 1990 murder of a 4-year-old girl, is released from Chiba Prison in Chiba Prefecture on June 4 after 17 years in jail. Prosecutors told a high court they will approve a retrial because a recent DNA test showed it is highly likely that he is innocent of the crime. (Kyodo)
