This is Dogashima. The building in the foreground is Ohmiya, Yamatoya across from it, Maruya next to it, and Edoya next to it. The small hall on top of the steps is Yamaiyama. Naraya is behind it. The waterfall on the left is Shirabe.           The Tamadare Falls

          Judging from the condition of the trees, this appears to be the Tamadare Waterfall before it was incorporated as Takinomae Park in 1891. The young woman is possibly an employee of a nearby inn. The volume of water is abundant and this photo shows the force of the falls before the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, when half of the fall was destroyed. Currently the falls, which are in the garden of Tenseien Hotel, are open to the public.             Nunobiki Falls

            Medaki waterfall at Nunobiki Falls, taken around the same time as photographs #2814 and 2827 (Medaki Waterfall of Nunobiki). The presence of the wooden bridge over the river and the teahouse and the absence of a water supply pump suggest that this was taken on the mid-Meiji Period. The stone girders of Shinkyo Bridge which were destroyed in the flooding of 1902 had joints as seen in the left of the photo.                       This photo is a panoramic view from Kotohira Shrine at Minamiyamate of the southern tip of the foreign settlement and the Naminohira area. The big building in the right foreground is Chintei Elementary school (later Naminohira Elementary School), a newly built and renamed school at the foot of Mr. Nabekanmuri. (Formerly known as Kozone Elementary School at a different location. Someone, possibly a teacher, is standing by the entrance. There are several boys and girls on the school ground.
